The problem: Everything should be electrified. Electricity is available. Even green power. But not where and when it’s needed. Big plans, tensions run high, budget too. So no decarbonization?
The problem of fast charging infrastructure is unresolved. If you ask us: Problem and solution are right in front of us.

The power grid does not deliver sufficient fast charging current to every location.

There is enough electricity, though often not available where it is truly needed. Fast charging of electric vehicles requires a lot of electricity. 150 kW, for example, is equivalent to the power requirements of around 50 households. However, the power grid does not have the capacity to supply an additional 50 households – or a fast-charging hub – at every location. For this, a so-called network upgrade usually has to be carried out. This costs time, money and nerves and, unfortunately, usually has little potential as a showcase project.

In the past, if more fuel was filled up, this had no effect on the power grid. Electromobility – especially the need for fast charging – is putting enormous strain on the capacities of the power grid. To prevent a collapse at peak times, grid operators are even forced to intervene in power distribution. This is then called peak smoothing or load management, but people rather talk about smart grid rather than throttling. In these moments, fast charging is not guaranteed. Slow charging perhaps is. But if everyday operations or business processes are based on reliable charging cycles, then there should at least be the will to improvise.
Today, an existing and sufficient electricity grid capacity at the planned location is a necessity for the economic operation of fast charging infrastructure. If, on the other hand, this grid capacity is not available, this minimizes the prospect of economic operation or repayment of the fast-charging infrastructure. The provision costs (network upgrade + network connection + charging facility) can easily vary by a factor of 10, depending on the site conditions. Therefore, an assessment of the overall economic viability is possible only after a detailed site analysis or a feasibility study have been completed. In addition, a valid estimate of the contribution margin to be generated in the future and the operating costs is required. The subsidy case is currently the most likely.

Like any investment, investments in charging infrastructure are a bet on the future. Especially if a return is to be achieved on the capital investment. Uncertainties, changing framework conditions or technological leaps pose a challenge for infrastructure projects designed for a long term. Even one’s own demand assessment, the presentation of a medium-term demand trend or a forecast for local public fast-charging demand may as well be compared to fortune telling. New customers, changing routes, new operational processes, or simply new objectives or, best of all, booming business and then relocation. Clearly, these things happen. However, the effects of changing conditions and usage on the fast-charging hub are completely unclear. Can it be adapted? Not yet, since the investment in form of cables and Hardware is buried deep underground and is bound to remain there.

Successful projects start with simple questions: What do we want to achieve? What resources are available? What is the initial situation? And: which interests are affected? These questions are not new. What is new is that there is no established deployment process for charging infrastructure to which established management routines can be applied. The analysis alone (e.g., inventory of available grid capacity for all locations) or the formulation of a target (e.g., provision of fast charging demand for the next 5-10 years), is quite challenging in the context of a dynamic energy and mobility transition. Particularly because misperceptions in long-term multistakeholder infrastructure projects are unpopular at the management level – or with the taxpayer. If fundamental questions cannot be answered beyond doubt, then planning charging infrastructure is not a solution.
Agile, dynamic, responsive, adaptable, scalable, resource-efficient, or simply always demand-driven. These are fundamental requirements for the design of operational processes and the design of business models. The inflexibility of grid-connected charging infrastructure, whether in its planning, implementation, or operational phases, responds to these requirements only to a limited extent. Often, inflexible charging infrastructure is already a factor preventing success. Fast charging capacity, on the other hand, should be understood as an adaptable and demand-driven business accelerator – everywhere.
The solution: We are consistent and eager. We only use green power. Charging rapid and everywhere. From this point on, it’s unlimited.

Charging modes

The following charging modes are available for the operator to choose from:

  1. First In – First Out. The first electric vehicle receives 100% of the system power until it reaches 80% of the battery level, after which 100% is automatically allocated to the second vehicle, and so on.
  2. The operator defines the power distribution for the two charging units to e.g. max. 90 kW at charging unit A and max. 60 kW at charging unit B (or A: 120 kW / B: 30 kW). Within these set values the power output at the charging units is stepless. The requested values are stored in the system by me energy and can be repeatedly reset if required.
  3. Dynamic. The system power is distributed dynamically to the active charging units with the aim of achieving the shortest possible charging times for both electric vehicles. To this aim, the charging processes are permanently analyzed and an optimal power distribution is predicted and controlled.

There is enough electricity available, but rarely where it is needed. Fast charging of electric vehicles requires a lot of electricity. For example, 150 kW corresponds to the electricity consumption of around 50 households [or a 20-storey high-rise]. However, the power grid is far from having the capacity to supply 50 households – or a quick charging point – at every point. As a rule, a so-called network upgrade must be carried out for this. This costs time, money and nerves and unfortunately usually has little showcase project potential.

me energy is the first provider and operator of grid-independent and CO 2 -neutral fast charging stations. Me energy’s products and services enable the economic and nationwide breakthrough of electromobility and thus make an important contribution to the decarbonization of our way of life. The special thing about it is that the charging current is generated by the fast charging station itself. This means that the fast charging stations can be operated at any desired location – completely independent of the availability or the capacity of the local power grid. With the technology developed by me energy, the liquid energy carrier bioethanol is converted into CO 2 -neutral charging current. In the field of energy conversion in charging stations, me energy has now registered nine patents. The me energy principle eliminates the usual implementation costs that normally arise with the planning, approval and structural implementation of the connection to the power grid or its upgrading. This means that economical and climate-neutral fast charging solutions can be offered with which a 200 km range can be charged in ten minutes – anywhere. Technology development is subsidized within the framework of the Brandenburg Innovation Specialists funding program and the ProFIT Brandenburg funding program. For the development period from July 2019 to June 2021, the aim is to develop the product to market maturity and thus to be able to offer a completely self-sufficient, climate-neutral and economically operated fast charging station. The market entry with pilot fast charging stations took place in July 2020, the start of series production is planned for the third quarter of 2021 – rapid charging beyond the grid.
